have you ever

It was windy yesterday evening, and cooler than it's been. It looked stormy out; ergo, I very intelligently went for a walk. Nice to begin with, really, with archetypical summer lightning-- white forks in a bright blue sky-- crescendoing thunder, and, finally, rain. Enormous drops that screamed down for maybe a couple hundred seconds. And that was that. A few minutes of precipitation, and then nothing. The ultimate warm-weather downpour, lovely while it lasted but nowhere near as long as it needed to be. The plants had been watered, but not enough, and instead of that fresh post-rain scent, the entire world smelled like a combination of vomit and mildew, mingling with a desperately cloying odor of flowers. Hot and heavy and painful to breathe. I walked home wet, drying in the annoyingly present sun, and trying to hold my breath. I swear, sometimes summer has chronic halitosis.

Adieu.
